What you need to run Workbook Connect
Workbook Connect is an Excel add-in built on Microsoft’s VSTO technology, so it needs a few Microsoft components on your machine. Most people already have all three, and the installer checks for them before it changes anything.
- Microsoft Excel on Windows 10 or later
- .NET Framework 4.7.2 or later
- Visual Studio Tools for Office Runtime (the “VSTO Runtime”)
Not the Visual Studio IDE
The VSTO Runtime is a small, free Microsoft component, not the Visual Studio IDE. There are no developer tools to install. It is just a lightweight runtime that lets Office add-ins like Workbook Connect run inside Excel.
Most machines already have it
Modern Microsoft 365 and Office installations ship with both the .NET Framework and the VSTO Runtime, so in the typical case nothing extra needs to be installed.
The installer checks for you
When you run the installer, it automatically verifies Excel, the .NET Framework, and the VSTO Runtime. If anything is missing, it stops with a clear message and a direct download link before installing, so you can never end up with a broken half-install.
Installing manually (rarely needed)
On a minimal or IT-managed machine you may need to add these yourself. The VSTO Runtime and .NET Framework 4.7.2 are both free downloads from Microsoft. Installing them may require administrator rights; on locked-down corporate machines your IT department usually provides them as part of the standard Office setup.
Connecting to Databricks?
One extra component applies only if your data lives in a Databricks SQL Warehouse: the Databricks ODBC Driver version 2.10 or later, a free download from Databricks. Installing it requires administrator rights and it has to match the bitness of your Office installation, so a 64-bit driver for 64-bit Excel. Workbook Connect checks for a suitable driver when you connect and links you straight to the download if it is missing. SQL Server, Azure SQL Database and Fabric need no extra driver.
