Workbook Connect for Databricks Lakebase

Databricks Lakebase brings a fully managed, Postgres-compatible database to the lakehouse. Workbook Connect lets your team maintain its operational and reference data from Excel, with Lakebase staying the single source of truth.

Your spreadsheet, connected to Lakebase

Browse a table, edit a value, and publish it straight back. Excel and Lakebase stay in sync, with no exports or copy-paste in between.

EXCELDATABRICKS LAKEBASE

A Postgres database at the heart of your lakehouse

Lakebase gives Databricks a transactional, Postgres-compatible engine for operational workloads. Because it speaks Postgres, Workbook Connect slots right in: connect to your Lakebase compute, pick a table, and business users maintain master and reference data without leaving Excel.

Every commit is one transaction

Unlike a SQL warehouse, Lakebase enforces primary keys and runs real transactions, and Workbook Connect leans on both. A commit applies every changed row inside a single transaction, so either all of it lands or none of it does. Identity and generated columns stay read-only, and a row that someone else changed in the meantime is reported as a conflict instead of being overwritten.

Secure and governed by Databricks

Everyone signs in with Microsoft Entra ID and works as their own Databricks identity, over an encrypted connection. The short-lived database token comes straight from your workspace, so there is no password to share or store. Workbook Connect only lists the tables that identity can see and never writes around the database, so the roles and privileges your platform team set in Lakebase decide exactly what each user can change.
FAQ

Any questions?

Over the native PostgreSQL protocol, with the driver built into the add-in, so there is nothing extra to install. Lakebase has its own entry in the connect dialog: enter the compute host from the Lakebase app and the host of the workspace that owns the project. Lakebase Autoscaling projects are supported; Lakebase Provisioned instances are not.

With Microsoft Entra ID, in your browser, with your usual multi-factor prompt. Workbook Connect then asks your Databricks workspace for the hourly database token and renews it silently, so there is no token to copy or paste. Connections use SSL with certificate verification.

No. The SQL Warehouse connector targets Unity Catalog tables through the Databricks ODBC driver and commits statement by statement. Lakebase is a transactional Postgres database, so a commit there runs as one transaction and either applies every row or none.

Each update and delete is matched on the row's primary key. If another user or process changed or removed that row since you loaded it, Workbook Connect reports a conflict and asks you to refresh rather than overwriting their work.
